A new life honoring the past
This modernist apartment, located in the first residential building on Barcelona’s Gran Via, has been renovated with the utmost respect for its history. The three siblings who inherited it wanted to transform it without losing the essence of their aunt a modern, feminist, and vibrant woman.
The original layout, fragmented and dark, didn’t favor light or the connection between spaces. Now, the kitchen, dining room, and living area open up to the large windows facing the inner façade, creating a bright, open central hub, while the bathroom acts as a transition to the nighttime area, with three more functional bedrooms. The once-underutilized grand entrance hall has been transformed into a study.
But the renovation didn’t aim to erase the past it sought to integrate it into the apartment’s new life. The original ceiling moldings were preserved, maintaining traces of the old layout, and light fixtures, mirrors, and furniture were restored so that memories continue to be part of daily life.
A project that honors family heritage, preserving the character of the space while adapting it to a new chapter.
